Two weekends ago I went to get my car's oil changed and happened to wander into the Borders nearby to kill some time. As you probably know, me + bookstore = bad news. It's not easy for me to make a short trip to one because I want to read everything and gain all of the knowledge that I can. I get too excited! There are so many stories, skills, etc. to take in that it is a bit overwhelming. To curb this impulse I pile tons of stuff into my arms and believe that not only will it save me a trip to the gym but it will limit my gluttony. It doesn't always work. Thankfully, I live in an era where technology can help me. iPhone to the rescue! I snapped a few pictures of the books I had piled around me so that I could later search them at my local library and save some moola. It's cheap and it's reusing existing resources. Go green!
The books I was interested were mostly about business, leadership, and investments and I ended up finding them through the library as books on tape. I would highly recommend going this route becaues you can upload them to your iTunes and then load the books onto your iPod or MP3 player. It's so easy and it beats listening to the mainstream radio.
My Recommendation: Now, Discover Your Strengths (newest edition is called Strengthfinder 2.0)
Main Concept: We as individuals and managers should invest more time and resources into developing strengths rather than trying to compensate for weaknesses or train them up. The basic underlying assumption being that anyone can learn anything passably.
Key Component: Strengths Finder profile
Key Take-Aways: Once you complete the profile, you receive your five most dominant themes of strength and from there can see how to best activate them to achieve success and satisfaction out of your work.
